IASR Membership Information

Academy members are individuals with a record of scholarship in sex research. Membership in the Academy is by election. The process is initiated by a current member who nominates the prospective member. A current member (the nominator, typically) sends an email of nomination and then the candidate sends his or her curriculum vitae to the Secretary-Treasurer, who forwards these materials (the letter and vitae) to the Membership Committee. The Membership Committee makes a recommendation to the Full members who attend the annual meeting of the Academy, and the Academy votes.

There are three levels of membership, Associate, Full and Student. Although these criteria are not absolute, Associate members should have at least three sex-related publications in peer-reviewed journals. Full members should have at least 10. First authored publications in well-known journals are viewed especially favorably, as are systematic peer-reviewed empirical studies (as opposed to clinical reports and book chapters, for example). Student members are individuals engaging in sex research at an institute of higher learning. They must be nominated by a member of the Academy, who serves as their sponsor. They should have their mentor send an email letter of support and the potential student member should send their CV to the Secretary-Treasurer. See the link below to contact the Secretary-Treasurer.

Membership Responsibilities and Benefits
Membership requires dues that sustain the organization and both Associate and Full members receive a subscription to the Archives of Sexual Behavior. All members have electronic access via the website. They are also entitled to present posters (two maximum) at the Annual Meeting. Brief Communications are refereed and if not selected may be resubmitted for a poster presentation. (Note that oral symposium presentations are planned by the Scientific Program Committee based on proposals submitted by the membership during the year prior to the meeting.) Only Full members can vote on membership and Officer elections. The dues for 2010 are $150 (US). Student members are not required to pay dues at present until three years post-graduation and receive a discount on registration at the annual meeting.
